“Love As a Way of Life” by Gary Chapman (and a giveaway)

image002Gary Chapman is the author of twenty-five books, including the New York Times bestseller The Five Love Languages, with more than 4 million copies in print. His daily radio program, A Love Language Minute, is broadcast on more than 100 stations nationwide. Chapman, a graduate of Moody Bible Institute, Wheaton College, Wake-Forest University, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, serves on the pastoral staff at Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

loveasawayFor decades Dr. Gary Chapman’s best-selling books have shown readers how to speak the “love language” of those they care about. Now he digs even deeper to uncover the foundations of what it means to cultivate a lifestyle of love and how doing so leads to satisfaction and success in every area of life.

Mr. Chapman is here today to share with us about his new book “Love As A Way of Life.” At the end of this interview you will be given a chance to win a copy of Gary Chapman’s new book.

1. Describe some of the everyday situations that can be changed if a person has a foundation of love.

When love becomes the focus of ones life it will change every encounter we have with people. In the family, the husband is thinking, “what can I do before I leave for work that would be helpful for my wife?” Such thinking may lead him to take the trash out, put his breakfast plates in the dishwasher or feed the baby while his wife takes a shower.

In the workplace, employees are asking, “on my break, what might I do that would help someone else?” They will also make time to listen to a co-worker who seems to be having a hard time with a personal issue.

At the bank, post office, or cafeteria, the lover will look people in the eye and smile, perhaps opening the door to a conversation. They will express interest in what is going on in the lives of those they encounter.

The focus is not on “it’s all about me.” But, rather on “It is all about others.”

2. What is the take-away message of Love as a Way of Life?

Love as a Way of Life is designed to help the person who sincerely wants to make a positive impact in the world. I believe that is ‘most of us.’ Our biggest problem is that we don’t know how and we keep getting tripped up by our own selfish ambitions. The purpose of the book is to help us break free from the prison of selfishness and come to experience the satisfaction of truly loving others as a way of life. It is little acts of love that build up to a lifestyle of service.

3. Why do you need a foundation of love before you start figuring out our love languages?

The five love languages give information on the most effective way to express love in a meaningful way to a particular person. But, if you are not a loving person – don’t have the heart or will to focus on others – the information is of little value. Most of us must make a conscious change of focus from self to others if we are going to genuinely, and consistently enrich the lives of others. Love as a Way of Life is designed to help people make that change.

4. When did you realize the need for this book?

I first recognized the need for Love as a Way of Life when in a counseling session a husband said to me, “I’ll tell you right now, if it is going to take my washing dishes, and doing the laundry for my wife to feel loved, you can forget that.” I had just explained to him the concept of the five love languages and that his wife’s primary love language was ‘acts of service’ and that these acts would deeply communicate his love to her. I realized that he lacked the will to meet his wife’s need for love. He was locked into his own perception of what his role was to be and it did not include washing dishes and doing laundry. I knew at that moment that there was something more foundational than simply knowing a person’s love language.

5. What are the seven characteristics of lasting love?

I view love not as a single entity, but as a cluster of traits, which if developed will enhance all of life. These traits are:

Kindness: discovering the joy of helping others

Patience: accepting the imperfections of others

Forgiveness: finding freedom from the grip of anger

Courtesy: treating others as friends

Humility: stepping down so someone else can step up

Generosity: giving your time, money, and abilities to others

Honesty: caring enough to tell the truth

6. Why do you think it’s so hard for people to embrace these characteristics?

All of us have some of these characteristics to some degree. Most people see love as being better than hate. But most of us are comfortable to live somewhere between love and hate in a lifestyle that is fundamentally focused on self. We feel good when we are making money, accumulating things, gaining status, but in time these things do not ultimately satisfy what I call the ‘true self’. The true self longs to make the world a better place to live. To do something to help those less fortunate than we.

However, we all suffer from the malady of being ego-centric. I call this the ‘false self’. It is that part of man that pulls him to focus on self-preservation and a self-centered lifestyle. This is not all bad. Indeed we must meet our own physical and emotional needs in order to continue life. It is when we never get beyond this self focus, that life becomes a ‘dog eat dog’ world where everyone is out for self even at the expense of others. Such a life never brings long-term satisfaction. However it is often later in life that people discover the emptiness of selfish living. I’m hoping that Love as a Way of Life will help people discover the satisfaction of developing the ‘true self’ earlier in life.

Convinced that in a world of constant conflict people desperately need authentic love, Chapman paints a compelling vision of how life can be richer and relationships more satisfying for anyone who practices Love As a Way of Life.

This book is very informative and easy to read. Like Mr. Chapman has mentioned you need this foundation before you move on to implementing the five love language. If you would like to win a copy of Gary Chapman’s new book Love As a Way of Life please leave me a comment below. I will select a winner after Friday the 18th.

Truffles By The Sea by Julie Carobini

I am not going to be able to review this book until after summer for Book Buzz due to already scheduled awesome interviews. But I just finished this book and if you are looking for a fun summer time read, THIS IS IT. It is laid back, fun, and has a message. Travel to the sea with Gabby Flores.

Gabby Flores watched her apartment building burn down, discovered her delivery guy has taken off with most of her business, and she has the knack of dating Mr. Wrong. The only way to go is up, right?

From the suggestion of her friend she moves to a waterfront loft and works to rebuild her life. But just when she thinks things can not go wrong she finds her self in the middle of a lawsuit, dealing with a nosey neighbor that gets in everyone’s business, and a Don Juan of landlords. Where is the Lord when everything seems to be going so wrong? And is she destined to be single for the rest of her life. Maybe “happily-ever-after” is not for her.

Truffles By The Sea was so delightful to read. It is a perfect, “take to the beach” kind of book, or just reading it you feel like you are escaping to the beach. I usually don’t care for chick-lit kind of books, but this Julie Carobini has made me a fan of hers. I will be looking for more books to come.

My only complaint while reading this book is I read it while trying to diet and I was constantly hungry for brownies and truffles!!

For Parents Only: Getting Inside the head of your kid by Shaunti Feldhahn and Lisa Rice

I only have to look to my 13 year old and know we speak a different language. Shaunti Feldhahn and Lisa A Rice who brought us the best-selling books For Women Only, For Men Only, and For Young Women Only now brings us For Parents Only: Getting Inside the head of your kid. In this book they share the results of a nationwide survey and personal interviews they did with more than 1,000 real-life teens and tweens to tackle those things parents often don’t “get” about their kids. I am a relatively young Mom of a 13 year old so I figured it has not been that long since I was a teen. I have to admit this book opened my eyes. This book does a great job defining what “We Think is Happening” versus “What’s Really Happening.”

The book addresses topics such as:

What is the most intoxicating and addictive thing your teenager seeks?

What is the best way to parent?

What can we do as parents so they don’t emotionally shut us out, but actually seek our advice?

What do they really mean when they tell you to “stop freaking out?”

These are all subjects that are addressed in this book, along with so much more. I highly recommend it, I think it will be a book I will refer back to many times. BUT BUT GUESS WHAT….you can to!!!

Multnomah Books has give me TWO COPIES TO GIVE AWAY….FOR FREE…I will announce the winner December 3rd.

If you are interested please let me know in the comments. I WILL ONLY SELECT FROM THE ONES WHO SAY THEY ARE INTERESTED.

*************************************************************

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
2 Corinthians 13:14 (ESV)

1. I am thankful that I was able to spend time with my family over Thanksgiving.

2. I am thankful that I am beginning to feel better.

3. I am thankful for cooler weather and the holiday season. I love Christmas music and decorations. Sitting beside my tree is one of my favorite things to do.

4. I am thankful that God continues to mold me and teach me daily. Without his grace I would be lost.

So what are you thankful for today? Leave your link here and be sure to visit other participants. I am thankful Iris has given me this opportunity to host Thankful Thursday.

PS be sure to mention in the comments if you are interested in winning one of the books mentioned above.

Hope for the Journey through Cancer by Yuonne Ortega

Hope for the Journey through Cancer

by Yuonne Ortega

Fleming H. Revell

October is breast cancer awareness month and before this month ends I would like to highlight a book I was given. I really don’t feel worthy reviewing this book because I do not have cancer nor do I have a family member that has cancer, but I realize I am a minority.

So you might be like me and think, why should I read this book? Well let me give you some information on why this is a must read book.

Who gets breast cancer?

All women are at risk for breast cancer. Known risk factors like having a family history of breast cancer, starting menopause after age 55 or never having children account for only a small number of new breast cancer cases every year. That means that most women who get breast cancer have no known risk factors except being a woman and getting older. (source Koman.org)

So if you are a woman and you are getting older, you have a risk of contacting breast cancer.

Ortega’s books is a sixty day journey looking for hope in the midst of cancer. But don’t be fooled, this book is not just for the one who HAS cancer, but for family members and friends who are helping someone through breast cancer. Ortega is open and honest about her fears, her pain, depression, and having to relying on others. God took each of these areas and gives Ortega HOPE.

Each devotional begins with a “Hope Builder” which is the bible reading for each day. She displays real honesty and humility right from the first page until you finish the last. I found I could not put this book down, I kept it in my car and read it while waiting for my kids to get out of school, it was that good.

I strongly recommend each church library to have a copy of Ortega’s book, each person who knows someone going through a medical crisis. I promise you this book will bless whoever reads it.

Fall Into Reading # 7, 8, 9

I have been so far behind in updating my Fall Into Reading list, so I am catching up today. I have finished reading the following three books.

Faith of My Fathers by Lynn Austin

I really really really like this series. (hint, hint hint…go buy, check out etc.. the books). Lynn Austin really has a way of bringing some of the Old Testament figures to life.

Among the Gods by Lynn Austin

Memory Keeper’s Daugther by Kim Edwards

This is a book you will either love or hate, really there is no in-between. I like it, but I could totally see how someone could dislike it. This book was different in style then I am use to reading. I loved the story line, I loved seeing how choices made have a life altering effect to several parties involved. There are so many lessons in the book and the imagery I thought was good in the book also.
