What does teenage boys, football, trout, and a Christmas Bowl all having in common? Well to really find out you will have to read The Great Christmas Bowl.

Marianne Wallace lives for the holidays. This year she is focused on two things this holiday season: planning the greatest family Christmas ever and cheering on her youngest son’s team in their bid for the state championship. Disaster strikes when the team loses their mascot-the Trout. Is it going too far to ask her to don the costume? And what about her husband volunteering her to organize the church Christmas tea, what was he thinking?? When football playoffs start ramping up, the Christmas tea starts falling apart. Then, one by one her children tell her they can’t come home for Christmas. As life starts to unravel, will Marianne remember the true meaning of the holidays?

This is a short, but powerful book. I was traveling and read the whole book while sitting on an airplane. I have to admit I received some strange looks when I was laughing out loud, but the the end of the book she had this mother of teenagers sitting there with tears staining the books pages. The Great Christmas Bowl touched me on so many levels: one, I am a mother of teenagers and can relate to Marianne’s heart; secondly, so many times God places us in situations that are bigger than us so his glory can shine through. Marianne learned that our plans may not be God’s plans, but wherever God shows up it is so much better. I believe all women who attend church and plan events should read this book, to often we are stuck in what has been done year after year instead of seeking out new ways to minister to others around us. This book is worth its price for the Warren Christmas Clam Chowder recipe alone! If there is only one book you read this Christmas season, read The Great Christmas Bowl.
