  • I have a confession, before I began reading Christian books, I was a big Stephen King’s fan growing up. And I should probably not admit this, for fear I will blow the image you may have of me as a reviewer, but my first child was named after a character in one of Stephen King’s books.

When I began reading Christian fiction, it would make sense that I feel in love with Frank Peretti (This Present Darkness, being a personal favorite). Why do I admit this? Well meet John B. Olson. John B. Olson is a perfect blend of Frank Peretti and Stephen King combined. But be assured, Olson’s writing and style is very unique with a thrilling plot that is full of redemption and romance. If someone would have told me what Shade was about before I began reading it, I probably would not have picked the book up. In fact I was not sent this book for review, I actually won it. But I LOVED this book.

Shade is a book that kept me up late at night, turning the pages as fast as I could read. Christy Award winning author, John B. Olson describes in vivid detail the battle between good and evil. Just like his character Hailey we sometimes wonder if we are imagining the evil—wondering if we are just losing our mind. Then something happens that has us come face to face with evil, what really matters is what you believe.

Karri, a reviewer on Amazon said this about Shade, “I’m so glad this novel got published. It’s one of the most unique plots I’ve read in a long, long time. Weird in a good way. Shade is about the possibilities of things unseen, deceiving appearances, the reality of the supernatural. Olson does a great job making the reader wonder who is sane and who is crazy, who is telling the truth and who is dangerous.” I could not have said it any better!

    About Shade:

“You will not fear the terror of the night.” —Psalm 91

A monstrous waking nightmare is pursuing graduate student Hailey Maniates across San Francisco to Golden Gate Park where she is rescued by a towering homeless man. She seems able to read her rescuer’s mind, but is it just a delusion? Doctors diagnose her as a paranoid schizophrenic and attempt to prescribe away her alleged hallucinations. But too many questions remain around Hailey and the man who saved her. He appears to suffer from her same mental condition and is convinced that some type of Gypsy vampire is trying to kill them both.

Against reason, Hailey finds herself more and more attracted to this strange man. But what if he is a fantasy? What if he is the monster?
