  • Kansas City Missouri 1870 Lydia recently lost her husband and father in a freak accident. Lydia—despite the fact that she thought her husband hated her— finds that all her husbands’ fortune is left to her. Her adult stepchildren do not like this and battle to regain the fortune they believe belongs to them. Lydia wanted a new life and to escape the bad memories of the last few years, so she travels to Alaska to live with her Aunt Zerelda. Once in Alaska she meets Kjell Lindquist the local sawmill owner. Despite vowing she will never marry again, Kjell displays a kindness Lydia has never known.

After her arrival in Alaska she is surprised to discover she is pregnant with her dead husband’s baby. Upon hearing this news one of Lydia’s stepchildren track her down in Sitka, Alaska in hopes of making sure this child is raised properly. While relying on Aunt Zerelda and Kjell for protection, she fights to move past her painful past and tries to learn that God can bring good into any situation.

Tracie Peterson is one of my favorite authors. Dawn’s Prelude is the first in the Song of Alaska series. This is a good story, but I will admit the evil the stepchildren exhibit was a bit dark. Abuse, prejudice, and false pretenses are dominate themes throughout this book, but God can take those evils and turn them into something good. I look forward to more in this series, I believe Dawn’s Prelude lays a good foundation for the rest of the books in the Song of Alaska series.
