The book of Proverbs is what the title implies—a collection or anthology of individual proverbs. Proverbs is an example of “Wisdom Literature” in the OT, the other books being Job, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon, together with the wisdom psalms. A key term in Proverbs is of course “wisdom.” Much of what is written in Proverbs is observations about life, how we should live our life, what we need to avoid, and what does it all mean?

Warren Baldwin’s book Roaring Lions, Cracking Rocks, and Other Gems from Proverbs is a wonderful book outlining much of the wisdom found in the book of Proverbs. Baldwin breaks down Roaring Lions, Cracking Rocks, and Other Gems from Proverbs into eight sections: Husband and wife; Mom, Dad and The Kids; Accepting God’s Will; Discipline; Responsibility; Wisdom in Relationships; Spiritual Living; and Community. Each chapter has 10-15 readings on the topic. This will make a great devotional book by reading one or two proverbs a day (which is what I did!), or it would make a great book for a small study group. Baldwin is a rich story teller, each illustration offers examples of living life according to the wisdom found in the book of Proverbs.

If the book of Proverbs is a book that seems a bit overwhelming to read, I encourage you to pick up Roaring Lions, Cracking Rocks, and Other Gems from Proverbs by Warren Baldwin. The verses along with rich stories will bless you.

This is the heart of the gospel: God’s search to reclaim us and love us as his own. But have we truly grasped this? Those of us who have disdained Christianity as a religion of bigotry—have we repudiated the genuine article or merely demonstrated our own prejudice and ignorance? Those of us who are Christians—have we deeply apprehended the mission of Jesus, and do our ways and character faithfully reflect his beauty? From the nature of God, to the human condition, to the work of Jesus, to God’s coming kingdom, and all that lies between, how well do we understand the foundational truths of Christianity and their implications?

First I want to say I listed to this book via audio, I did not read it. For me personally I was glad I did so, Charles Colson is an articulate reader and has an easy to listen to voice. To say I walk away from this book understanding everything Colson was communicating would be a lie. He is far advanced in wisdom and it may take me listening several times to some of the chapters to understand everything he is communicating but this book is powerful!!

How much do Christians who have grown up inside of the church walls all their life really understand the foundational truths of Christianity. I fear not many and I admit I don’t know as much as I would like to know. But how are we going to know THE TRUTH when we are not even sure how to recognize the truth? How are we going to prepare ourselves as Christians when we cannot name two of the major opponents of Christianity?

This is a book also for non-believers who may have questions about what having a saving faith in Jesus Christ means. This will give you the foundation of the Christian belief and why God is who he says he is.

I am sure I will listen to this book again, it was a joy to listen to him while riding in my car. He is a man of great wisdom and a man God is using in powerful ways. If you are looking for a wonderful book to read about the Christian faith I encourage you to pick up The Faith by Charles Colson.

Christian leader, cultural commentator, and author of at least 20 books, including several that have been recognized with ECPA Christian Book Awards.

As former Special Counsel for President Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1973, he is noted for being the first member of the Nixon administration to be incarcerated for Watergate-related charges.[1] He was commonly named as one of the Watergate Seven, but was never charged with, or prosecuted for, any crime related to the Watergate break-in or its cover-up, although he did plead guilty to obstruction of justice in another case.[2] He converted to Christianity in 1973, and the following year served seven months of a one-to-three year sentence in Alabama’s Maxwell Prison.[1]

Colson’s later life has been spent working with his non-profit organization devoted to prison ministry called “Prison Fellowship.” Colson is also a public speaker and author. He is founder and chairman of the Wilberforce Forum, which is the “Christian worldview thinking, teaching, and advocacy arm of” Prison Fellowship, and includes Colson’s daily radio broadcast, BreakPoint, now heard on a thousand outlets. The ministry conducts justice reform efforts through Justice Fellowship.[3]

Colson has received 15 honorary doctorates and in 1993 was awarded the Templeton Prize, the world’s largest annual financial prize given for merit (over $1 million), which is given each year to the one person in the world who has done the most to advance the cause of religion. He donated this prize to further the work of Prison Fellowship, as he does all his speaking fees and royalties. (cite)
