In Other Words…

in Biblical Message

Do I have any Stargate Atlantis watchers out there? I guess I will be showing a bit of my nerdiness.

The premise of the show is a lost city called Atlantis that was discovered by Earth (it is located in another dimension). A group of people called the “Ancients” built and lived in this city but were forced to leave. The Ancients were very intelligent people, had great technology, and reached a level of awareness a person could only dream of. People from Earth found this lost city located deep under the water, they were able to raise the city from the depths of the sea and now inhabit this place. But they don’t understand everything about the place. There are mysteries they have not even begun to understand. They are in search of the “Ancients” to find out why they had to abandon their city, also to find out more about the city, and to learn more about new technology they have never seen. This is the best of our Earth’s best, the smartest, trying to learn more about people who lived long ago. They are people who made their mistakes (they developed a plague by accident that ended up killing most of them, some fled the city, others were made evil due to the plague). Whew…I say all that to say:

We live our lives looking, learning, and discovering the Ancients also. Trying to copy them, relate to them, and learn from their past mistakes.

I look at David, and I see a man after God’s own heart. I desire the heart of David.

I look at Ruth and her dedication. I desire Ruth’s dedication to things of importance.

I look at Isaiah and his revelations from God. How I desire for God to speak to me like that.

I look at Esther, who was created for just a time as this to save her people. I desire Esther’s purpose.

I see Peter and how he likes to eat his words, but God still called him the rock. How I desire Peter’s steadfastness.

I see John’s heart; Jesus called him “beloved.” How I desire to have John’s passion.

I see a Paul a “worst of sinners” transformed to be one of God’s greatest missionary. How I desire Paul’s desire for spreading the word.

I see Timothy who did not let people’s comments on his youth get in the way. How I desire to have Timothy’s perseverance.

Ultimately I look at Jesus Christ and try to follow how he lived his life here on Earth. But I will be honest, I like to see how ancient sinners lived and how God came to call them “wonderful/beautiful/beloved/rock” etc… It gives me hope.

Some of the sins they fell into, I can read about and try to learn from book knowledge instead of life experience. Praise God there were ones who paved the way for me. Ones who give me hope to continue, because God did not give up on them. Ones who blew it big time, but still made the “Hall of Fame” in God’s eyes.

I don’t know if the people of Stargate Atlantis will ever find their Ancients and be able to ask a lot of questions. I am fortunate that I have the bible that gives me their perspective, their struggles, and their walk with God. And I know right where to find them. After I see Jesus, it will be at the feet of these people I will be sitting and listen to all the stories they have. Praise God I have eternity, I can ask a lot of questions.

I wanted to thank you for the Easter e-card! And, I love what you wrote here. We have a song that we sing over our boys every night that goes through various Bible heroes and prays that our boys will have the individual character traits of the various heroes. Did that make sense? I love it! Your words reminded me of the song we sing. Beautiful words. Thanks.

“ones who blew it big time, but still made it into God’s “Hall of Fame”"
Oh, to only hear, “Well done, good & faithful servant!”

Well said, Laurel! I’ve never seen the show but it sounds like something I’d watch. It seems the lost are always searching for something.

Blessings to you.

So inspiring Laurel, I love getting to know the people in the Bible instead of just knowing that they existed. I have so much to learn from them. Thanks.

THank you for sharing so beautifully. We certainly do have a hope and am thankful that God reveals both the good & bad in us and those in Scripture.

What an inspiring post, Laurel. You always do such a great job with the quote for In Other Words.

I couldn’t agree more - the Bible is best biographical book ever written.

I really enjoyed this. I long to have many of the qualities of the “ancients” you mentioned as well. :)

What a really great perspective! I love that you show how God loved all those ancient sinners and called them his chosen people.

Fantastic!

“I see Peter and how he likes to eat his words, but God still called him the rock. How I desire Peter’s steadfastness.”

I loved your play on words here.

As Christians, we have a great resource, the Bible — Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. For me no other manual is needed in directing me in my everyday life.

Blessings…

Laurel-

I am so moved by your post that I really don’t have words. I want to print that list off and tape it to the wall as a reference for when I need a role model in a specific area of my life. Thank you so much for posting this today.

Jenny

Yes, you found a watcher. I am not normally a sci-fi fan but when it comes to the “Stargates”–I love them.
And i love what you did when the quote today.
I guess the Patriarchs won’t mind being call the ancients.
O.k, I am going to be corny –get ready–Sometimes I feel like saying—-beam me up Lordy.
Can’t believe I just wrote that. Guess I am losing it. :)

What a great, great analogy Laurel. I was thinking not too long ago about the people who populate the pages of scripture. Not very many of them didn’t make huge mistakes and missteps. I’m so thankful for that. I have great hope when I see what God’s grace and mercy and forgiveness can do in a person’s life.
I love all your examples. You did an excellent job. Thanks.

Yes, Laurel,
I like Stargate and Stargate Atlantis too. Great post and good tie in.
