In "Other" Words…

by Lori

“If a commission by an earthly king is considered a honor, how can a commission by a Heavenly King be considered a sacrifice?” ~David Livingstone

Commission by dictionary.com is defined as “the condition of being placed under special authoritative responsibility or charge.” Commissioned officers receive their authority from a sovereign power and, as such, hold a commission charging them with the duties and responsibilities of a specific office or position.

The ones charged with the commission wear that as a badge of honor, they were selected out of their peers to follow the King’s orders. An example is a Knight, the word Knight brings up the image of war and service. But it also shows loyalty, honor, glory, courage—this is where we get “knight in shinning armor.” A knight would do everything within his or her power to follow through on his commission.

Many times to accept this commission can mean risk of injury, risk of abandonment, or even the risk of death.

As Christians we sometimes hear the term “I am willing to sacrifice for Christ.” Why is it termed sacrifice? I consider it an honor. God’s commission to you:

Matthew 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

I am going to go off topic here. I am finding this difficult to write with a heavy heart for the VA families. But the verse above says HE IS WITH YOU ALWAYS, if any of these precious college kids were Christians, Jesus was right there with them. And any that were not, then that should light our fire even more about how important your commission is. I truly believe things are going to get worse before they get better. We need to let people know there is hope.

I weep with those who weep and I stand on the promise that God will comfort those who turn to him. God will strenghten them for the days ahead, even when all you see is darkness.

So head out with The Great Commission in mind.

PS sorry for posting so early, but I had to kick my son off his computer to do this. Mine is still in the Computer Drs. office. But I still will visit you all tommorrow.

Thank you for sharing and for motivating us to get off of our tushes and introduce the world to our savior. It will get worse. We must take this seriously. Thanks for the lightbulb moment!

    God bless!

Thank you for this, I hate when anything big like this happens, lots of people die, and the American public immediately makes comments to comfort each other, assuming everyone who died went to be with the Lord, but that's not what Scripture says. So we need to be very clear, even in light of tragedies like this one, we all have to make a choice, and even not choosing IS a choice.

"So head out with the Great Commission in mind." Amen, and amen. The light shines so much brighter amid the darkness of events like this. Praise His name for the blessed hope He offers through His Son. What a wonderful, timely quote.

We certainly have been given “the condition of being placed under special authoritative responsibility or charge.” The events of yesterday certainly bring that responsibility to the forefront, but we are just as liable in our service when it involves checking up on a friend or doing the laundry or cleaning a tiolet for the sake of our families. Those things make it seem like a sacrifice instead of an honor, but God views them as a commission just the same as our words to hurting people.

You always have a timely word!

Yes the word tells us it will wax worse and worse, and the VA situation is just one of many I fear.

I love your writing Laurel. My heart is heavy too, and I struggle to understand the "why" of this senseless tragedy. You are right - it should cause us to be concerned for the lost around us and share the message of salvation.

We are in one accord. Before even reading your post, this week's "In Other Words" led me to the importance of salvation and a personal relationship, along with my testimony.

May the light of the world that is within each of us be hope to a world that is dying from hopelessness.

I'm so thankful for my part in the Great Commission. For my heart is burdened whenever I here of tragedy or loss and think but for the grace of God there go I!

Laurel, isn't this just like God? You picked the quote last week. We, as Christians really needed to reflect on His commission this week. We are the ones that have the hope. And I totally agree with you on this. It will only get worse.

Thank you for hosting this week. Blessings to you and yours.
