Also I would like to mention Friday got away from me so I forgot to remind you I am hosting In Other Words. I have not done one since beginning of summer so I am looking froward to getting back into the swing of things. With this quote the more I meditated on it the more profound it felt to me.
“The worth and excellency of a soul is to be measured by the object of its love.” a Henry Scougal quote (from The Life of God in the Soul of Man ), quoted by John Piper in The Pleasures of God.
I know this quote can be difficult at first so let me give you some thoughts to help you, because I really think this is a profound quote that makes each of us think about how we spend our time and efforts:
1. You can learn a lot about a person by looking at what they enjoy.
2. Scougal suggests that your worth and character are ultimately determined by what you delight in.
3. “God demonstrates His worth and excellency by cherishing His name above all else, and using His unlimited power and wisdom to spread His name all over the world. It is us that benefit from this. We are thirsty, and He is the living water. We are hungry, and He is the bread of life. When we are satisfied in Him, when we delight in Him, when we depend upon Him, when we share His gospel, it expresses to the world His greatness.
The question I leave with you tonight is not what are you going to do for the Lord, or what are you going to commit to, or anything like that. My question cuts much deeper, to the core.
What do you delight in? What is your food? What do you find yourself talking about most? What do you orient your life around? What is it that determines what you do? In short, what, or should I say who, is the object of your love?” Kelly Liebengood
