Well “meanest Mom in the world”….gets my vote of approval!

DES MOINES, Iowa — Jane Hambleton has dubbed herself the “meanest mom on the planet.”

After finding alcohol in her son’s car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old’s misdeed with everyone — by placing an ad in the local newspaper.

The ad reads: “OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don’t love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet.”

Hambleton has heard from people besides interested buyers since recently placing the ad in The Des Moines Register.

The 48-year-old from Fort Dodge says she has fielded more than 70 telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, school counselors and even a Georgia man who wanted to congratulate her. (READ THE REST HERE)

As a mother of three boys, one being a teenager, I am telling you sometimes as parents you have to go for the shock value to keep your kids safe. Her son will never forget this, despite how unhappy he is right now, and Mom may have just saved her sons life. I would do the same!

That would have to be one of the best punishments I have heard of in a while. Go Mom! I am sharing this with my sister!

Ah but she’s a smart mean mommy! Kudo’s to her for having the guts to actually carry out a consequence that actually will mean something.

So much better than just complaining about it and not actually doing anything about it–which is what my mom does with my 16 year old brother (though his problem isn’t drinking but girls and grades). Go meanest mom in the world!

I couldn’t agree more!!! This young man will NEVER forget this experience!!! You go Meanest Mom in the World.

Well, now…that kind of moxie wins my approval, too. Gosh, I’d like to think I’d be that dramatic if faced with the same circumstances….

LOL - I think she did a great thing!!!! I believe that her son will thank her one day, maybe not tomorrow. Thank you for sharing this, my friend.

SHUCKS—for some crazy reason…my computer said that post could not be found! I would love to read it! Sounds like something one of the atty’s I work for would do. E-mail it to me if you get a chance!
I LOVE being a mean mom!

That is one smart mama and I applaud her. You’re right. Her son may think she’s evil, but he’ll think twice about combining drinking and driving ever again.

She not only probably saved her son’s life, she very possibly saved him the agony of living with the fact that he killed an innocent person or family, for the rest of his life.

What’s he doing with booze in the first place - I think she taught him TWO lessons. Good for her!

Yay! Good for her! Very smart mommy.

I loved this story too! Hooray for parent-power!

Amen to Barb’s comment. The mother probably did save her son’s life and that of others! God bless her! Mommy intervention is always tough and a matter of prayer at any point in our children’s growth to adulthood. Who we are to our children directly impacts who they become to the world.

This is so good! I probably wouldn’t have come up with something so clever. Way to go Iowa mom!
