Ok you may laugh but I am serious…

Some of you may think I am writing this tongue in cheek, but I assure you I am not. We are now entering a new phase here in the “Laurel” household.

What is the new phase you ask?

Well first let me preface this by saying I married a sports lover; I knew this when I married him. Early on in our marriage we had to learn how to balance sport watching with, paying attention to wife time (notice I said we). Manly Man has gotten a lot better, through the years he has turned off important games to listen to me. And I praised God for TiVo because now everything can be paused.

Well the new phase we are entering is my two oldest sons have moved from watching cartoons to sports 24/7. Not that I let them watch TV 24/7. But now they watch the “saved” games Manly Man has on his TiVo.

Ok that is not so bad, except while driving in the car all conversation rotates around “do you think so and so is a good player?”, “what do you think of this team”, etc… sometimes grumpy Mommy has to pipe up and say “NO MORE SPORTS TALK”. They kind of look at me and then sit there in silence. And I feel like the Mom who takes out all the joy in the room.

I want my boys to enjoy what they are doing. After homework they are playing sports outside most of the day. Football is over and Basketball begins.

But how much sports can one girl take? I was so proud of myself for training encouraging my husband to spend more time conversing. But now I feel out-numbered and at square one again.

Thanks for letting me vent. Even my dog and cat are male.

I sympathize with you. My smallest men are 2 and 4, but I’m sure that my time will come;)

In our house it is not sports talk but computer/console/D&D games. My girls join in as well. So often they will be having a conversation that rotates around whatever game they or Daddy is playing. Meanwhile, I could gladly remove all electronic games from our house and be perfectly happy. May I say that I m utterly sick of being asked if “I can play Game Cube” or finding that all three have disappeared into my husband’s lair, where I find them all happily seated on Daddy’s desk watching him play whatever game he is into at the moment! I had to learn to game in self-defense, otherwise I never saw my husband. I have awesome aim with a sniper rifle (Unreal Tournament) and love my assassin(Diablo II). May I say that any mention of the evils of gaming are strictly forbidden in my household? Goodness. Give me a good book any day.

I know you don’t want to hear “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”, right? So I wont’ even mention that ‘k? :v)

My hubby totally relates to you. Yup, you read that right. In our house it’s me and teen daughter who are into sports. Love hockey & now she’s getting into football so I’ll watch with her. We both love basketball. Although, I have to say I’m on my own with the figure skating. Saturday night hubby went to bed at 7:30 ’cause we commandeered the tv for the Notre Dame game. He hates sports. So if it makes you feel better he totally knows what you’re going through. :vD

I am sorry Laurel that you have to battle the sports at the home front.
I was blessed enough to have a hubby who is not into sports, but he likes different movies than I do. But sometimes he watches a chick-flick with me :)…

I got reinforcement last year - we are now 3-2 when it comes to males in our home (we have a male and female dog)…

Oh, I hear you about being the only female around (well, to be honest, we have a cat that used to be female). And while even Camden is too young to have the attention span to watch long sporting events, I still feel the pain about the whole male thing. Just the potty humor stuff gets really old… :)

sports @_@
My irritation is that every conversation in every social setting, lately, is sports. Is as though no one reads anymore, no one thinks, no one lives, they all just watch sports.

can you get them into other conversations? Ask a question, when you get in the car, or sit together.

At some point, they might be thankful they were forced to converse.

Too funny. My dh is a big sports fan, too. When he’s with his family, a lot of talk revolves around that, but since he has no one to share with here, I am spared. I’ve actually always enjoyed watching Sportscenter and the sports talk shows. Not the sporting events, but the shows that talk about them. . . .
